From November 3-5 our newest members of the executive team -- Aida, Gillyan, Ivan, Mann and Thomas -- took a trip to Circle Square Ranch in Brantford ON to attend the annual Key Leader Retreat!

Key Leader is a Kiwanis-run event that runs throughout the course of one weekend, where youth experience service-leadership and learn about the different ways they can impact their community.

The weekend consisted of different group activities, talks that were run by our leaders, and lots of inspiring stories!

Upon arrival, participants checked in and decided on the rooms they would share with other people for the weekend. The rest of the night was spent getting to know others from all around Ontario (From Sarnia to Niagara Falls!) and attending a seminar run by the leader. Everyone was separated into teams called neighbourhoods, in which they created banners and slogans and participated in activities and games together.

The meetings that were run throughout the day during the entire retreat were focused on key traits that everyone was meant to learn and dig deeper into by the time they had to leave. Once these traits -- Leadership, Integrity, Growth, and Respect -- were truly learned and appreciated, everyone truly got a better sense of how they should treat themselves as well as others in life.

The extent to which some people opened up about their feelings, emotions, anxieties and insecurities was unbelievable. It made everyone feel understood and listened to, and it was so encouraging to know that you could be comfortable in sharing your thoughts with everyone.

Apart from these educational (yet inspiring) talks, there was plenty of time for fun and free time! Everyone was able to go on the high ropes, and try out different obstacle courses. For many, it was the chance to let go of their anxieties and step out of their comfort zone to try out something new, and by the time it was over, everyone had plenty of fun and it was even a big step forward for some.

Many of the games played were meant to teach us problem solving, teamwork, and some important life lessons. It was amazing how these valuable traits were incorporated in a way that made it fun for everyone!

In all, although Key Leader only lasted a weekend, it felt like so much more and truly changed the mindset of everyone who attended. Our executives were so glad that they went and have learned a lot about why it's so important to run Key Club Mississauga with the awareness that everyone should feel included, comfortable, and like a leader in their community.
